Perhaps thrift stores and their offerings aren't quite your style. You can still reduce your environmental impact and save money while donning designer duds.
Looking at the Dec-Jan issue of Fast Company I came across a feature on Jenny Fleiss and Jenn Hyman. These two Jenns, back in business school, joined forces to create Rent the Runway, a company offering designer couture for rent. They even do the cleaning.
Each rental has its own calendar, so that you can either search by dress, or by availability. You enter your event date and available selections pop up for your perusal. Rentals for four days run from $50 to $300, or roughly 10% of the retail dress price; for a little extra you can extend it to 8 days. They automatically ship two sizes, so you have some wiggle room. They also offer a second style on the same rental period for only $25. And, each dress comes complete with a full selection of coordinating accessories for rent, along with appropriate undergarments, such as thigh-high Spanx, for sale (nice touch ladies).
While it is a bit strange to be consulting the calendar of a dress, the benefits seem worthwhile. Though the offerings are still a bit pricey for routine outfitting, for those occasional special events, the ones where you'll only want to wear the dress once, this service opens the door to gowns that would normally be far beyond my budget, and, they offer all the glory without any of the commitment.
In fact, this is some of the easiest shopping I've done in a while (as a caveat I will admit that all the time I've spent in thrift stores over the last several months may be coloring my expectations). I found myself repeatedly drawn to the designs from Milly, by Michelle Smith.
Several of the Milly designs offered for rental at Rent the Runway.
I didn't see any shoes, so it appears you may be on your own for those, which is probably a safer bet. If you tend to party hard and find yourself in, well, less than your best the next morning, I'd recommend taking advantage of the $5 insurance policy. Apparently that's rarely a concern though, as Hyman and Fleiss find that their clients actually take very good care of their dresses, "better than we ever expected," Hyman told Fast Company, something they attribute to the fact that their clients have always dreampt of wearing these dresses and tend to cherish them.
I found their website easy to use, and the pictures and ability to zoom in on closeups was excellent. A super-quick tutorial (I know, tutorial sounds so boring, but this was anything but) fills you in on the process, then, after completing a simple registration sheet, you're all-access on a closet loaded with 95 designer brands, complete with coordinating accessories--all at your fingertips.
